My Pisces ass has always been a hopeless romantic. Even as a young girl, I believed love would save me.
When I was really little – 3 or 4 probably – before bed, I’d imagine that a prince from a different dimension was coming to save me and whisk me away in the night. I even slept in a certain position thinking it’d be easier for him to carry me.
Weird, right? Except… it tracks.
A young girl like me, growing up in the early 90s American Midwest, would be socialized to believe finding the love of my life is the best thing that could ever happen to me.
Even if you didn’t grow up in the same place or time as me, I’m confident you’ve been exposed to this thinking, too – this covert (well, sometimes overt) messaging that tells us love is the only thing that can redeem us from what would otherwise be a joyless, lonely life.
It took me 30+ years to start to understand the truth about love: that real love doesn’t grant salvation by transcending the mess of life, but directly engaging with it.
